Introducing the New and Improved FireFly Network Sandbox on Kaleido
Update
Since this post was written, Hyperledger FireFly has reached 1.0. Learn more here!

At Kaleido, we are committed to continuously enhancing our services and providing you with the latest advancements in blockchain technology. That’s why we’re excited to announce the new FireFly Sandbox functionality in the Kaleido console, which allows you to simulate a multi-party network on the chain of your choice via our self-service plan.

Through the Sandbox, you can access our suite of tools and services and build a consortium to begin testing your use case on a blockchain-backed application, moving at your own pace in a cost-effective way!

If you already have a FireFly Sandbox you need to upgrade your environment to get the benefits of this new release, instructions for which you can find here. This upgrade is great for current users and an especially important step for businesses that are still in the exploration phase and want to see how FireFly can accelerate their development efforts.

Select Environment in Kaleido Platform

You’ll find the option to start a FireFly Sandbox in the console when creating a new environment. Once started, you have the ability to create a single namespace. Here you will be able to use FireFly to send transactions, index tokens, compile smart contracts, create event listeners, and more. While the existing Kaleido console provides some of this functionality, FireFly offers a full stack of services and integrations in an open-source and more robust way. Additionally, Kaleido's Asset Platform runs on FireFly and the Sandbox will allow developers and stakeholders to prove functionality and technology fit before investing in a dedicated, custom solution.

The Sandbox in the latest version of FireFly lets you build with the open source Supernode

This new version of FireFly brings significant performance improvements, enhanced user experience, and more flexible configurations to empower your business operations. The goal of these enhancements is to allow you to start building a web3 application, and simulate a working multi-party system, at a very low cost.

When you log into Kaleido and launch a FireFly Sandbox environment, you’ll have access to the power of our open source middleware engine, including:

  • Open APIs: The fully API-enabled platform makes connecting Web 2.0 systems to web3 quick and simple for any developer.
  • Events and subscriptions: You can use blockchain listeners to monitor activity, connect to public off-chain sources, and communicate privately.
  • Smart contract management: Preview the full power of Kaleido’s smart contract management, from token templates to upgradeable contracts.
  • Digital assets: Set up a token pool with indexing contracts and start to simulate a business environment to test your use case against our platform.
  • Enhanced connectivity: Use the next-gen blockchain connector for Hyperledger FireFly to connect with public or private Ethereum-based blockchains.

To give you access to all these tools and services, we’ve fundamentally shifted how we support Hyperledger FireFly. With this more robust sandbox, we enable more customizations and more granular control of your environment—all in a secure and cost-effective testing environment.

This way you can test drive the most complete web3 development platform available today at the cost of a single IPFS node—then step into a premium, dedicated solution.

After testing in a FireFly Sandbox, upgrade to the Kaleido Asset Platform to experience advanced tokenization and more

What makes the FireFly Sandbox special is that it allows you to experience the simple, accelerated development tools we’ve made available in our Asset Platform. Once you’ve had the opportunity to build with Kaleido and you’re ready to take the next step into a powerful, dedicated solution, we’ll help you upgrade.

The Kaleido Asset Platform runs on an enterprise version of FireFly that includes enhanced out-of-box functionality for advanced tokenization, pluggable custody solutions, more robust blockchain connectors, and an all new interface. Additionally, there are specific modules to facilitate the management of digital assets, NFTs, CBDCs, and Consortiums.

Kaleido Asset Platform dashboard

When you move from testing in the FireFly Sandbox to Kaleido Asset Platform, you’ll have access to:

  • Advanced Asset Tokenization: The platform simplifies the process of issuing and overseeing digital assets at scale, organizing the generation, safeguarding, and submission of asset-related transactions to the blockchain network of your choice, public or private.
  • Powerful Smart Contract Management: To effectively handle the entire lifespan of your smart contracts, starting from their creation and initial deployment to subsequent upgrades, our platform offers a robust solution with smart contract tooling that automatically generates APIs for each contract you deploy with just a simple click, so developers of any level to easily code against them.
  • Robust Policy Engine: Our policy engine is unparalleled in its comprehensiveness, covering the entire spectrum of operations. You have the ability to establish access controls for all elements of the platform, and these policies can be dynamically enforced at the role level—all with a UI similar to familiar Web 2.0 applications.
  • Flexible Custody Solutions: Our flexible custody solutions empower you to dynamically generate new wallets and map those wallets to users. You have full control over custody management, as our platform offers plug-and-play support for various wallet setups, such as HD Wallets, HSM-based Key Management, and popular third-party solutions.
  • Flexible Chain Configurations: Kaleido is known for its Blockchain as a Service product, and our ability to quickly spin up high-quality chains has been proven in enterprise use cases around the globe. These same trusted chain layers underpin the Kaleido Asset Platform and include the option to build private chains, consortia chains, app chains, sidechains, and public chains.
  • All Fully API-Enabled: With our platform, you can future-proof your projects by taking ownership of your experience, leveraging APIs to enhance your system, and adapting to evolving market dynamics, including changes in token types or business models. This represents an updated approach to digital asset management that is tailored to the web3 era.
